Dear Del,

During the work day, the battery on my smartphone drains in a matter of hours. Is there any way to prevent this?

Exchange ActiveSync on your phone is in constant communication with your work email server and can drain your battery long before the end of a work day. A simple trick to extend battery life when you are in the office is to turn off email synchronization. While the specific steps may vary for each device or operating system version, here are the basics:

  • iPhone – Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Select ‘Fetch New Data’ and turn off ‘Push.’ From there you can change the ‘Fetch’ settings.
  • Android – In Email, go to Settings, select your Exchange account, and adjust the Exchange ActiveSync settings. Or simply turn off ‘Sync Email’ while you’re in the office.
  • BlackBerry – Go to Settings > Accounts and select your Exchange account. Go to Advanced > Push and select ‘Off.’
  • Windows Phone – Go to Settings > email + accounts and select your Exchange account. Change ‘Download new content’ to ‘manually.’

This trick comes in especially handy when you’ve left your charger at home. Just remember, when heading out of the office, to reverse these settings in order for your mail to sync in real time again.
