De-Mystifying Data Deduplication

by Chris Ecker, Chief Technology Officer

Have you ever looked at your backups or file server and been amazed and overwhelmed by the amount of data stored and backed up? Do you ever wonder how many duplicate files must be copied each time and how much time and storage space is wasted with them? New deduplication technology may be able to ease the pain of this data crunch.

To start, let’s define deduplication. Deduplication technology in its broadest definition involves removing or eliminating redundant information. From a storage perspective, the term deduplication involves storing one and only one instance of a data set (a file or block of storage) and not consuming additional storage space when encountering an identical data set. For example, think about a data center with ten Windows 2003 servers each having approximately 2 gigabytes (GB) worth of identical system and program files. Legacy storage technologies would consume storage space equal to 20 GB (10 servers times 2 GB per server). However, storage solutions that employ deduplication technology would consume only 2 GB of storage.

One of the most valuable applications of data deduplication technology is in the data backup arena. Through targeting backups to a destination that utilizes deduplication, compression ratios of up to 40 to 1 can be achieved. The value of deduplication can easily be seen when comparing these compression ratios to the typical tape compression ratio of 2 to 1.

DelCor utilizes and recommends deduplication technology by Data Domain, the recognized industry leader. Data Domain’s product line includes a range of appliance solutions for small business all the way through to storage arrays for large data centers. The feature sets include common backup application compatibility, throughput up to 40 TB per hour, and replication technology for efficient offsite transfer to a remote Data Domain storage system.
